Festival Activations: A Field Guide for CPG Brands

Festival Activations: A Field Guide for CPG Brands

Festivals used to be about volume, get a tent, blast logo wallpaper, hand out 50,000 samples, call it a win. That math is broken. Attendance is flat or down at most legacy festivals, sponsor inventory is up 200%, and the kid in front of you is comparing your activation to seven others on TikTok in real time.

What wins now is utility plus shareability. The best festival activations of 2024 were charging stations with shade, free-cold-water stations with branded bottles, and air-conditioned 'reset' lounges where attendees could actually sit down. Brands provided something the festival itself didn't, and got 4x the dwell time of the standard sampling tent.

Photo moments still work: but only if they're genuinely camera-worthy and located on the route between two high-traffic zones. A 15-foot mirror installation between the main stage and the food court will outperform a 30-foot installation tucked behind the merch tent every single time.

Festival staffing has its own physics. You need 30% more bodies than you think because shifts are brutal, dehydration takes people out, and the artist schedule will eat your peak hours. Build your team with overlap built in, and pay for a dedicated logistics lead who is not also expected to talk to attendees.
