Top tier: Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Nashville. High foot traffic, friendly permit environments (relatively), enormous venue inventory, year-round outdoor activation potential outside of NYC winter. These markets are also the most over-served, every brand activates here, so the bar for standout is highest.
Strong second tier: Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego. Less competitive activation calendars, cheaper venues, friendlier city ops teams, and audiences that are genuinely excited to see brands show up. We've seen identical activations deliver 2x the local press in a second-tier market vs. NYC.
Underrated: Tampa, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Kansas City. Strong sports markets, growing CPG retail penetration, lower production costs, and significantly easier logistics. If your brand can't justify the cost of a 50-market tour, a focused 12-market plan that weights these cities can outperform the bigger version.
Avoid (or budget defensively for): Boston (permit hostile), San Francisco (permit hostile + venue costs), New Orleans (logistics nightmare outside Mardi Gras), Seattle (rain math), Detroit (great venues, complicated city ops). Not 'avoid' permanently: but assume 30% higher production cost and a longer timeline.
